Overview:
The Garden State Initiative (GSI) is seeking a Policy Fellow to join our team. This fellowship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in policy research, legislative tracking and analysis, and communications. Ideal candidates are passionate about New Jersey state advocacy and public service and are eager to develop practical skills in the policy field.
As a Policy Fellow, you will attend committee meetings, write policy briefs, and communicate across various policy areas, including: Energy Policy, Budget and Fiscal Responsibility, School Funding, Infrastructure and Transportation, Pension Reform, and Affordable Housing. This role provides professional development opportunities, hands-on learning, and a chance to make a meaningful impact on New Jersey politics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitoring Legislation: Track and monitor local, state, and federal policy changes and legislative developments. Provide updates on relevant legislative activities and analyze their potential impacts.
- Advocacy and Communications: Help craft communication materials, including op-eds, press releases, social media content, and reports. Assist in organizing campaigns, events, and activities to promote policy initiatives.
- Research and Analysis: Conduct comprehensive research on relevant policy issues, legislation, and regulatory developments. Prepare policy briefs and identify key legislators to champion GSI policy initiatives.
- Policy Development: Research successful state policy efforts that mirror GSI’s goals, identify strategies, and positions on key issues that GSI could replicate in New Jersey.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Identify and engage in outreach with likeminded stakeholders, including policymakers, advocacy groups, think tanks, and the public.
- Collaborative Projects: Work closely with senior policy staff, other fellows, and external partners on collaborative projects related to policy advocacy and reform efforts.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in public policy, political science, law, economics, or a related field.
- Strong research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Familiarity with policy research tools, databases, and legislative tracking systems is a plus.
- Ability to synthesize complex information and present it in clear, concise formats.
- Interest in public service, advocacy, and policy change.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in policy research, government, or nonprofit organizations.
- Understanding of the legislative process at the federal, state, and local level.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and research tools.
