MORRISTOWN, NJ – Garden State Initiative’s president, Regina M. Egea, issued the following statement on Governor Phil Murphy’s Budget Address:

“Luckily for New Jersey, our state constitution requires a budget be enacted by the vote of duly elected members in our local state Assembly and Senate districts.   Those legislators will have the uncomfortable obligation to look homeowners, families, and small business owners in the eye and explain why borrowing $4 billion and raising taxes in order to spend more than last year is a plan that voters should admire.

Most businesses are adapting to new ways of delivering service to their customers, and most families have had to oversee their children’s education while working from home.  While still enduring this pandemic and seeing another state budget that asks for more of their money, New Jerseyans have to be asking themselves:

“Why can’t our state government tighten its belt when I have been trying to support my neighbors and help my family to live within our means?”

New Jersey deserves leadership that aspires to living within the reality of today while delivering a plan for a better tomorrow.  Accelerating spending by borrowing $4 billion and taxing everyday purchases is a road to decline not prosperity.”
