APP.com: NJ property taxes: Tell your representatives you need relief

Probably one of the best pieces of advice I ever received as an editorial writer is there is no point in writing about a problem unless you can offer a way to fix it. Hand-wringing isn’t enough.  The corollary to that advice is to be specific about who you think needs to take the lead in solving it. Name names. And, if necessary, take no prisoners. 

It was with that mindset that i began preparing notes for a luncheon talk I gave last week to members of the Rotary Club of Asbury Park. The topic was property taxes — specifically what to do to bring them under control.

I’ve been writing about taxes for years, offering my suggestions for ways to reduce them, and identifying those people with the power — and responsibility — to provide relief. When it comes to taxes, Identifying the villains — chiefly, past governors, past legislative leaders and public employees unions — is relatively easy. Getting them to do what’s necessary to turn things around has, quite obviously, been less so.
